The Specializations Boom
MBA programs come in all shapes and sizes, but most prospective students play it safe and plump for one of the stalwarts of finance, marketing, or management. One of the main reasons for this is that they do not fully investigate the diversity of specializations out there, and that’s a great shame because only once a student knows the full range of MBA options can they select the one that best fits their career goals.
The standard specializations are: Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, IT/Systems, Operations, and Entrepreneurship, but these are rapidly being joined by more specific subjects, such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Wine Management, Football Industries, Luxury Brand Management, Hotel Management etc. The trend to such courses is accelerating, with 2,500 candidates taking them in Europe in 2007, compared with just 200 ten years ago.
Are Specializations Credible?
All MBAs hold certain core attributes that are valued by employers seeking to hire the managers of the future, and general MBAs teach their students to think strategically and analytically. However, if you add to this a specialization that matches with future career goals then the combination can fast track a candidate to senior management.
Some people think that prospective employers are reluctant to hire people from such specialized programs because they lack credibility. After all does Hilton Hotels really need to hire an MBA in Hotel Management rather than an MBA generalist from a top school? The answer is not a simple one, and it all comes down to the credibility of the course in question. Students should be wary of small universities that are just using marketing skills to promote “hot topic” courses without having the depth to deliver a high quality course.
The Two Most Important Factors in Selecting a Specialization
If you decide to take the specialization route then you need to make sure that the school is well ranked for that specialization. For example, if International Management is your bag then the best schools are:
- INSEAD
- Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management
- Harvard Business School
- The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania
- IE Business School
Different
specializations will have different rankings, so do your research – prospective
employers will certainly do theirs.
Another factor is the one-year versus two-year course selection. A two-year course allows the student to be generalist in year one, and move to specialist in year two. On the other hand, a one-year specialist MBA is really a branding exercise as there is not enough time to cover both standard MBA topics and the specialization within the limited term time.

Concluding Thoughts
Specialized MBA programs are certainly spreading, from investment management, through to arts administration, real estate, and biosciences. But are these just branding exercises for smaller schools, rather than truly useful courses that benefit students? It seems not with established schools such as Berkley, Wharton and MIT offering programs in fields as specialized as sports management and e-commerce.
However, for students who take a specialized MBA not only are they accelerating their progress within that specialty, but also they are limiting their opportunity to work outside it. That can be problematic when your sector is hit by an economic downturn.
Another factor is that since these programs are new they often require a lower GPA, which means that you can possibly use them to enter a better school than would otherwise be possible.

I would think that IT specializations would be more popular, with the transitioning of more and more work to be done using networked technology. Then again, there is some potential for computer science majors to take IT positions in many businesses.

4. Unity of Command
An employee should receive orders from one superior only.
5. Unity of direction.
The organization should have a single plan of action to guide managers and workers.
6. Subordination of individual interests to the general interest.
The interests of any one employee or group of employees should not take precedence over the interests of the organization as a whole.
7. Remuneration.
Workers must be paid a fair wage for their services.
8. Centralization.
This term refers to the degree to which subordinates are involved in decision making.
9. Scalar Chain.
The line term refers to the degree to which subordinates are involved In decision making.
10. Order.
People and materials should be in the right place at the right time.
11. Equity.
Managers should be kind and fair to their subordinates.
12. Stability of tenure of personnel
Management should provide orderly personnel planning and ensure that replacements are available to fill vacancies.
13. Initiative.

I think you guys hit the nail on its head: Specialization can be a very useful thing and in fact focusing on a specialization (based on your future carreer plans) can increase your fit into the program and heighten your chances of admittance. However, it is true that many smaller and often unaccredited MBA schools offer specialized degrees to set themselves apart and give them a competitive advantage over more established institutions. That is why ample research about the program and the school is vital.

For some people a specialized Master's degree (e.g. Master in Finance, Master in Economics) might even be more interesting than pursuing an MBA degree. If you know exactly which area of business you want to go in to and need specific know-how enrolling in a specialized degree might be a good option.

Hey yamanote. It a beautiful article. thanks for posting such a great article. However MBA in Accounting is the best specilization because it covers both Account and Finance courses. So people with MBA in Accounting Specilization can choose their carrer in accounting and finance too.

mba (general) or mba (core)is often preloaded with 4-5 specialisations which a student can take viz. fin,it,hr,marketing and sometimes operations.ur degree will be considered as MBA(general) with fin or ..... specialisation.the first year for this mba is same and only in the second year u chose any of the above specialisations and almost 85% subjects remain same throughout
but the other mba's like avaiation mgt, capital market,banking, international business, real estate etc. are all together different from 1st year it self coz they start teaching u specialisation from 1st year.
Now Suraj, just an example with people like u with good knowledge of their industry like real estate or substantial work exp. can take a specialised MBA in real estate management and believe me if it is done through a reputed institution then there is no shortage of jobs and u ll be loaded with money in few years and ur pay cheque will definitely more than a general mba.i can suggest u some like mba in infrastructure management,project mgt, IT, oprations mgt or telecommunication and i dont think mba general will do any justice to u
ok now if have understood me Sweta, ur question of single or dual is kiddish thats why i am assuming u have little or no work exp.i think u have read the article above, the writer is also trying to warn u about small universities who are just introducing the specialisation to earn more. 1 specialisation is more than enough to get into any industry coz all the other sujects will be there in your MBA as well.it will also be a headache for u to explain dual specialisation to the interviewer when u go for a job.Moreover,dual specialisation is just a show off and doesn't give u any extra advantage.

Good article. It would help MBA students a lot if the B-schools had more internship programs. These were few and far between when I got my MBA, but I remember that my rate of learning went up exponentially on the job. There's nothing like "earn while you learn".
